What It Is and How It Develops

Macular Degeneration Explained

AMD is a degenerative condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. The macula plays a critical role in tasks like reading, driving, and recognizing faces. When the macula deteriorates, it leads to blurriness or blind spots in your central vision.

There are two types of AMD:

  1. Dry AMD: This is the most common form of the disease and occurs when the macula thins over time, resulting in gradual vision loss. Dry AMD progresses slowly, but it can still lead to vision impairment if left untreated.
  2. Wet AMD: A less common but more severe form of the disease, wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing rapid and severe vision loss. This requires immediate treatment to prevent further damage.

Key Factors to Know

Are You at Risk for AMD?

While anyone can develop macular degeneration, certain factors increase your risk. These risk factors include:

  • Age: AMD primarily affects people aged 50 and older, with risk increasing as you age.
  • Family History: If you have a family history, your chances of developing the condition are higher.
  • Smoking: Smokers are more likely to develop it, and the disease progresses faster.
  • Obesity and Poor Diet: Diets lacking in essential nutrients, especially those low in antioxidants and leafy greens, can increase your risk.
  • High Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Disease: Poor cardiovascular health and uncontrolled blood pressure can contribute to the development of AMD.
  • Prolonged Sun Exposure: UV light from the sun may also increase the risk of the disease.
